Latest News: Flights into Northern Iraq & Security
Last Monday Northern Iraq overwhelmingly voted in favour of a split from Iraq (Central government), according to local officials, as tensions soared following a contested referendum.
Central government last week asked foreign countries to stop flights to the international airports of Erbil (ORER) and Sulaimaniyah ORSU) in Northern Iraq territory. The Iraqi Civil Aviation Authority sent a notice on Wednesday 27.09.2017 to foreign airlines telling them international flights to Erbil and Sulamaniyah in the Northern region would be suspended on Friday at 15:00 GMT and only domestic flights allowed, unless Northern Iraq hands over airports and border posts.
Humanitarian and “emergency” flights are exempted, provided that they are pre-approved.
According to the latest released NOTAM:
OPERATIONS SUSPENDED FOR ALL INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS INTO ERBIL AIRPORT (ORER) & SULAIMANIYAH AIRPORT (ORSU). MILITARY, UNITED NATIONS, DIPLOMATIC AND HUMANITARIAN FLIGHTS MAY OPERATE SUBJECT TO APPROVAL AS DESCRIBED IN IRAQ AIP GEN 1.2.
Therefore Redstar will continue to apply for permits & fly to Iraq, as long as landing permits are going to be granted. The process will be as usual and our security team will keep you in the loop with further developments. Our Flight Operations Department is also working on alternative options in case permits will be denied.
We’ll keep you posted!
